Playa Del Carmen
Aka...the party central. The streets are filled with markets, Mexico flags decorate the walls and coconuts are always in sight.
I spent 5 nights in Playa. I originally had only booked 3 nights at my hostel but extended it whilst waiting for my friend Max to arrive. It was nice to slow down, not have to pack my bag AGAIN, hit the gym and lay by the beach.
I stayed at the Hostel Che in Playa. This place was awesome. The hosts looked after us well, it was clean, cozy and the vibes were an all time high. There was always something to do if you wished too. I joined in on free salsa dance classes, mixology classes (I am now queen of a margarita), played twister on the beach and drank lots of tequilla sunrises. In Mexico it is common to have 'ladies night' in most bars.
Definition of Ladies Night: chicks get free drinks during the allocated time slot. Sexist? Odd? Unsure what to think of this? But in conclusion it was freaking awesome.
But with the fun and laughter, there always comes trouble. Its hard to describe - most people appear your friend. I honestly could not tell you the difference between a good cop, bad cop, cartel member, dodgee Mexican or an innocent grandma. Trust no one ever. Which I evidently learnt. Strap yourselves in (sorry Mum and Dad - I have not told you this one yet)...
It was late one evening, we had finished up at the club only a few blocks away from the hostel and decided the party was not over and we would be continue at kickons near by. Approximately 20 minutes into the event we decided we had had enough and would head home. The 'security' of the bar refused to let us out saying 'the police are outside just wait 20 minutes'. The group of about 30 were told to shut up. The music was turned off. Everyone covering their mouths with their hand to avoid and noise peeping out. The door of the venue was bashed on violently. The police came rushing in moments later screaming at everyone to get on the ground. We all sat on the ground abiding what they had to say. I mean of course you would. They are the police. Right?? Anyone that tried to speak up and ask a questions was forcefully pushed towards the floor and told to be quiet and respect what was said. The police did their rounds, picking random people to 'search' for drugs. In the meantime taking all the money from their pockets. The drugs search is just a tactic and excuse they use to take all of your money. I was fortunate. They did not come past me - not that I had much cash on me anyways. Maybe 10 minutes had passed and they let us all go. What the fuck just happened? Turns out the event was a cartel party...
Mexico is slowly winning my heart, unsure how? Or why? I have tried explaining these stories to people but I think its just best to experience these things yourself before you can actually believe me!
Scary!!
